Many people over the years have led their countries with an iron fist. Some have especially refused to allow any kind of dissent to occur without the risk of death. The leaders who have abused their powers and taken over the world in such a hostile manner are typically known as dictators.
The signs of dictators are very noticeable throughout the world. A dictator is typically a person who engages in a number of hostile actions all in the name of holding more power:
- They often make the rules in their favor. That is, they will not include anyone in the world who might disagree with their beliefs or ideas. They may also exclude their country from the rest of the world.

Mao Zedong led China for nearly thirty years as it became a strong communist power. He excluded China from much of the rest of the world and enforced a policy where the state government runs everything. The most significant concern from him came from the Great Chinese famine where food was restricted to many around the country during his tenure. This led to the deaths of at least forty million people.
During his run as the leader of the Soviet Union, Stalin fostered the communist climate that permeated over the country until its dissolution. He was adamant on keeping everyone in line and would send people to gulag camps if they disagreed with him. Around forty million people in the country died over guidelines set up during Stalin’s tenure.
In addition to try to take over many other countries through invasions during his rule of Germany, Adolf Hitler also orchestrated plans to where a standard of white people were ruling the country. This led to the persecution of Jews and others who were in the minority and eventually led to the Holocaust.
Throughout his rule of Iraq, Saddam Hussein orchestrated the mass genocide of many ethnic groups that opposed his rule. Much of this entailed torture and the use of chemical weapons. At least two million people died under his run of the country.

The original leader of North Korea, Kim ruled for nearly fifty years. His regime was extremely intense in that he demanded that all people respect him. Even the slightest sense of disregard for Kim would result in a person and other family members being sent into prisons or concentration camps. Kim also started the Korean War and killed the generals that worked on his team.
Pol Pot ordered many of his own people in Cambodia to work for him as slaves. About a quarter of the population of Cambodia died during his regime as they were forced into slavery. He also forced farmers to work in the city while those in the city would work in farms, thus leading to a massive famine.
Vlad the Impaler
Vlad the Impaler ruled much of Romania in the fifteenth century and was notorious for not only choosing prisoners and slaves at random but also for how he killed them. He was heavily interested in torturing his prisoners while impaling them with sticks to ensure they would die as slowly as possible. He killed about 100,000 people during his many tenures as the ruler of Romania.
During his rule of Uganda, Idi Amin declared war on all Asians in the country and ordered anyone who was Asian out. He blamed the Asians for the economic struggles in Uganda but under his rule, those problems only became worse. Amin was also interested in torture.
Robert Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since it became independent from the British in 1980. His country has forcibly removed its opponents and has tortured many who disapprove of his rule. His tenure eventually led to the collapse of Zimbabwe’s currency, thus destroying much of the country’s economy.
The former ruler of Libya, Qaddafi engaged in many actions like randomly shooting protestors and mass rapes. He also orchestrated attacks on many people from outside the country including the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988. Qaddafi was also on record as a Holocaust denier.
